Sustainability
McNicholas works towards sustainable development not only in its everyday operations as an employer and profitable organisation but also in terms of the nature of the infrastructure projects with which it is involved.
The company is fully aware of its environmental, social and economic responsibilities to its employees and shareholders as well as its customers, suppliers and the public at large. As society demands more effort by everyone to reduce adverse impact on the environment, McNicholas understands the business imperative to be - and to be seen as - an aware, responsible company.
Having analysed what sustainability means to the company and its various stakeholders, McNicholas has formalised its commitment towards sustainability by setting a strategy. It has identified ten activity streams that individually and collectively contribute to its sustainable development.
Five of these protect and develop the business
- Compliance
- Procurement
- People
- Innovation
- Ethos
and five relate to how the company can protect and enhance the society in which it operates
- Community
- Conservation
- Carbon emissions
- Pollution
- Waste management.

- Developing and implementing a management system based on the requirements of BS 8900:2006 - Guidance for managing sustainable development
- Achieving a 50 per cent reuse / recycling rate across the company
- Developing a carbon reporting mechanism meeting the requirement of ISO 14064:2006 - Greenhouse gases.
