“Innovation is an essential activity for McNicholas; it ensures we maintain our commitments to our Clients and their customers as well as helping us generate ideas to find more efficient and effective ways of delivering our services whilst reducing the impact of our work on communities and the environment” quotes CEO Barry McNicholas.
Innovation might be something as simple as sharing knowledge between Business Units, or include suggestions on processes, technology or materials new to the market that will save time, money and resources. The group have close connections with Universities and Research bodies and they intend to be a hub for sharing great ideas to help McNicholas continuously improve.
We are passionate about harnessing innovation to meet our clients’ needs as efficiently as possible. Providing innovative solutions that eliminate time, waste and money, is one of our core skills. We enjoy making change happen by challenging the traditional ways of doing things.
Using our highly sophisticated Building Information Modelling (BIM) software, our in-house design team achieved an integrated design for the new, multi-utility infrastructure for the 2012 Olympic Park, managing complex interfaces with large numbers of stakeholders in a £9 billion overall programme. This created a seamless solution that mitigated the risk of utility clashes.
Handheld technology is one of the areas where we have focused investment in the last year. It enables us to record signatures as well as photos with date, time and GPS location stamp. It also updates the status of jobs and has been particularly successful in streamlining streetworks management.
Partnering between organisations to develop new processes, solutions and technologies is nothing new. Open innovation helps transform delivery through combining external and internal ideas, to identifying tools and processes to help meet our clients' expectations for performance and efficiency.
We identify the tools we need to use and the teams and skill-sets required. By proactively embracing collaborative behaviour across the supply chain, we reach out to others to make their contribution.
