Beaulieu Park awarded UKPN Capital Programme and Procurement 'Project of the Year 2016'

On the 5th December 2016 the Alliance was delighted to be awarded the UKPN Capital Programme & Procurement (CP&P) ‘Project of the Year 2016’ Award for their successful delivery of the Beaulieu Park 132kV Diversions scheme in Chelmsford. The award was made by Nirmal Kotecha, UKPN’s Director of CP&P.

The award, made at the CP&P Roadshow in London, recognised the first class, on-time, on-budget delivery of a scheme that enabled a very satisfied customer - Countryside Homes - to carry on with their expansion of the development, which includes 3,600 homes, a new railway station, schools, a hotel, leisure centre, community facilities and retail park.

The majority of the scheme was undertaken by McNicholas (new cable route), with Amec Foster Wheeler delivering the tower works. The scheme was delivered alongside UKPN Sub-Programme Manager Ian Cameron and Project Manager Colm O’Brien, by McNicholas Operations Manager Ian Rush, and Project Manager Liam Bradley.

The scheme was value-engineered to meet the customer’s requirements at lowest economic cost, including the removal of a temporary steel bridge by liaising with a neighbouring farmer and securing access without it.

The Beaulieu Park scheme ran for 52 weeks and the work scope included:

• undergrounding of 5kM of 132kV cable circuits
• 132kV fluid-filled cable (FFC) transition joint and bay
• sealing end compound reconfiguration works
• site clearance within ecological areas
• construction of a new sealing end tower offline
• tower dismantlement and removal of 14 towers

Both new circuits were energised on the weekend before the October clock change and the towers were removed in the following two weeks.

After presenting the award, Nirmal commented that “Beaulieu Park is a great all round example of a well-delivered scheme, a fine effort by the team that fully deserves this recognition and demonstrates that the Alliance is in excellent shape to meet complex delivery challenges as the rest of RIIO ED1 unfolds”.
McNicholas Construction are a member of the UK Power Networks (UKPN) ED1SON Alliance alongside Amec Foster Wheeler, Clancy Docwra, and Morrison Utility Services. The team work collaboratively with UKPN to refurbish and upgrade electricity substations, cables and power lines across London, the East and South East.
